A check-list of non-toxic cooking and cleaning essentials.
Where would you say is the place with most toxic products in your home? For me, it was my kitchen. When I started my journey to a cleaner way of living, my kitchen was the first place to see the change.
If you don't know my story, I started becoming more mindful about toxins right after having my first son, Levi. I was diagnosed with Postpartum Depression when he had just turned four months old, I'd been struggling with insomnia for a while, and my husband started to notice that I was slowly developing a kind of anxiety that was hard to keep under control. We went to the ER one day, when my anxiety was so high I could hardly breath, and I was then directed to a neurologist with whom I initiated therapy right away.
I was put on medication in the beginning of my therapy, but my doctor - who was so wise and knowledgeable - encouraged me to consider working on a plan to wean myself off in less than a year. I would do that by changing simple practices in my life, such as doing sleep hygiene, cutting out toxins in my food, adding exercise to my routine, and making lifestyle changes that would benefit me and help me wean off medication. It seemed like an unattainable plan at the time, but I pressed forward and began my journey to a more natural way of living.
Before I begin, I hope you can take note that people are different, and that I am not here to make any promises, but simply to share my experience, in the hopes that - in case you're overwhelmed by the amount of toxins contained in your household - you can feel encouraged to take baby steps, and make small changes that will make a big impact in your life.
Back in the day, If you opened the cupboard under my sink, you would see plastic brushes, all purpose cleaners filled with chemicals, a popular dish soap (probably blue), toxic dishwasher pads and sponges. Yep, that was me. You would never believe that if you visited our home now, but here's my piece of encouragement: we all have to start somewhere, and I started really small.
I compiled a list of non-toxic kitchen tools and essentials that I love and feel confident recommending.

Cooking Supplies
I know plastic cooking supplies are cheaper, but they only really last a couple of years before needing to be replaced. It will definitely be an investment but one that will be well worth it for your health and your finances.
We love cooking in our Lodge Cast Iron Skillet, and it's probably the most used skillet in our house. I wouldn't buy from any other brand.

I can't say enough good things about our Milk Maker. It was the best addition to our kitchen, and it's the first thing I recommend to all of my friends when they ask me what kind of nut milk I drink. There's no better plant-based milk than homemade plant-based milk.
If you never heard of Almond Cow before, this magical machine is a wonderful Milk Maker that I consider a must have in any kitchen. With Almond Cow, you can use any nut, seed, or grain to make homemade plant-based milk in moments. It makes 5-6 cups of fresh milk at the touch of a button. No need to strain. No mess. Easy cleanup.
We drink a LOT of smoothies in our home, and I'm so glad I made the switch to homemade plant-based milk, because I have such peace of mind knowing I'm offering my children only safe ingredients in their smoothies.
A few reasons why I chose Almond Cow:
- Store bought milks have gums, fillers, conservatives and sometimes not even a good amount of nuts in them. Most inexpensive plant-based milks provide a minimum amount of nuts. And some even use canola oil as a thickener. When you make your own nut milk, you have control over the ingredients. How about adding some sesame seeds to your milk for real calcium value?
- You can make any kind of mix you wish in the almond cow: Oat + Almonds, Coconut + Cashew, Almonds + Vanilla, Oat + Coconut... the possibilities are endless.
- Less food waste, and better use of your groceries: every time you make your own plant-based milk, you will get a pulp meal! Which you can use in your breakfast bowls, add it to your smoothies or muffins 😋
- Using the Almond Cow is so easy!! It takes less than 5 minutes to make your own milk.
